Since 2003, Capital Royalty has been at the forefront of the healthcare royalty financing industry. The Capital Royalty investment team has been responsible for the most significant developments in the industry, including identifying royalty investments as a discrete investment class, structuring the first revenue interest royalties, and developing the royalty bond structure.
Capital Royalty was founded by Charles Tate, a private equity pioneer and board advisor to some of the world’s leading healthcare institutions. Mr. Tate recognized that licensing activity and royalty payments are an integral part of the pharmaceutical industry. The challenge he saw facing royalty owners is that they are often unable to access cost-effective capital for their highly valuable intellectual property assets. Capital Royalty was created to meet the capital needs of such royalty holders, launching its first fund in 2005 to work with healthcare companies and institutions to monetize their royalty streams.
The firm continues to grow and develop an impressive track record, working with many healthcare companies and institutions in monetizing their royalty interests. In early 2009, Capital Royalty expanded its investment team to further strengthen the firm’s leadership expertise in healthcare investing, capital markets, and fixed income structures. Mr. Tate recruited Nate Hukill and Mike Weinmann, two leading royalty bond pioneers, to join Capital Royalty. The impetus for this expansion was the recognition that royalty bond and bond-like structures offer royalty owners a more efficient method of accessing capital and greater collateral protection for investors.
Today, the Capital Royalty investment team has more than 140 years of healthcare, capital markets, private equity and investment banking experience, having collectively completed more than 50 royalty transactions representing $3.7 billion in capital over the past 15 years.
